Here’s a sample of some of our work. Please note, some of these projects were delivered by Creative Interpretation, a company run by one of our directors. People Powered has taken over the sustainable transport business from Creative Interpretation.
Newport Pedestrian Audit
We were commissioned by Newport & Carisbrooke Parish Council to audit the pedestrian environment in the centre of Newport. We developed a methodology to assess each street for various criteria which affect the quality of the environment for people walking and produced a report with recommendations for ways to improve. We were subsequently asked to undertake some follow up work and produce some outline plans for location-specific improvements. The work has been integrated into the Newport Place Plan, and the report has been formally adopted by the parish who are now looking at opportunities to work with Isle of Wight Council and other partners to move forward some of the projects.
Newport Permeability Study
While preparing their 2017 Cycling Strategy for the Isle of Wight, CycleWight identified a need to better understand the degree to which streets in Newport were cyclable by people of various abilities. We co-developed a project with them to assess every street in the town, and went on to deliver the project for them. This involved a physical assessment of each street undertaken by bicycle and the creation of a scoring system to determine which streets were suitable for different types of user. In addition we assessed other barriers to cycling such as physical barriers and one-way streets. The end result was a full report and digital map which is now being used to plan future projects to enable ordinary people to use a bike to get around the town.
Wootton Bridge & Whippingham Active Travel Audit
Commissioned by Wootton Bridge Parish Council, with Whippingham Parish Council brought on as a partner to increase the coverage and share costs, this project assessed the environment for walking and cycling in the parishes, uses the methodologies from the two Newport studies, but also introducing new electronic date collection techniques to speed data entry. The resultant report is being used to inform parish plans for the future and the cycling data has been fed into a growing cycling data-set for the Isle of Wight which People Powered hopes to build on with support from other parishes in the near future.
Cargo Bike Feasibility Study
The Isle of Wight Council commissioned us to undertake a study looking at how electric cargo bikes could be introduced to the Island for commercial deliveries. We have completed a review of operations elsewhere in the UK and mainland Europe and are working with the local business community to identify possible opportunities on the Island.
CycleWight have commissioned us to manage part of their “Paths for All” project. This project aims to assess all Isle of Wight Footpaths to identify those that may be suitable for upgrade to allow cycling. We have produced a survey methodology, trained 10 CycleWight volunteers, undertaken a desktop study and produced survey maps for the volunteers. Once surveying is complete we will build a comprehensive GIS map of the results and identify 10 potential pilot upgrade projects.
